Diabetes in Homoeopathy

Diabetes mellitus is a clinical syndrome characterized by severe fluctuation in plasma blood glucose. Under such a chronic condition, the operation of the body and its metabolism is affected in the long run. Diabetes can affect every system in the body.

Pancreatitis and related diseases are common but unrecognized causes of diabetes.

Types of the problem:

o   Type 1: Insulin deficiency. The body’s natural ability to generate insulin is severely low.

o   Type 2: Chronic spike of plasma blood glucose. Impaired sensitivity to insulin.  Natural level of insulin in the body might be sufficient but the response to it and subsequent absorption of blood plasma glucose is impaired.

Associated Issues/Symptoms:

o   In cases of hyperglycaemia:

Thirst, Dry mouth, Polyuria, Nocturia, Tiredness, Fatigue, Lethargy, Change in weight (usually weight loss), Blurring of vision, Pruritus Vulvae {Infection in genital (in case of female)}, Nausea, Headache, Hyperphagia (prediction/craving for sweet food), Mood swing/change, Irritability, Difficulty in concentration.

o   In cases of hypoglycaemia:

Sweating, Trembling, Pounding heart, Hunger anxiety, Delirium, Drowsiness, Speech difficulty, Inability to concentrate, in-coordination, Irritability/Anger.

o   In cases of severe fluctuation from low levels to sudden spike in blood glucose levels, a combination of symptoms of both hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia is often noted in the same affected individual person.

·Solution Approach with Homoeopathy:

With Homoeopathy, the focus is on individualized treatment and not so much aimed at the isolated disease. In many cases, the condition of diabetes/spike in blood sugar is not the real issue. Diabetic condition of the body could be its response to the underlying core problem that’s affecting the patient. So, treating the symptom only would create a situation where the patient is fluctuating from being well for a certain period of time and then quickly falling sick again. We need to locate and find the root cause that is causing the body to respond by having such a spike or fluctuation in the levels of glucose in blood plasma. Before taking any particular remedy, please consult a qualified homoeopathic physician. The physician would perform a detailed examination of the individual constitution of the patient as a whole. This includes a thorough study of the set of associated symptoms and only then prescribe the exact course of individualized treatment best suited for the affected person.

Recommended Self-Management Strategy:

o   Dietary Management:

Avoiding/limiting intake of processed food, high sugar content; avoid smoking, alcohol; stress, depression;

Incorporating more natural seasonal fruits in your diet

o   Lifestyle changes

·         Incorporating physical exercises

o   Regular Monitoring of blood sugar levels.

·         It is advisable to keep the levels within approximately 80-140 mg/dl PP (post-prandial) and 70-110 mg/dl while fasting.
